Cool Topic: Native America and Africa

I felt inspired that native american music was being exposed to schools! And the kids look like there really into it! I feel like this gives some hope of passing on the Native American culture!

I thought it was so cool to see this Japanese girl being so involved with the african music culture.

I thought this was a nice picture because it shows the Native Americans dancing and singing around the campfire for the "great spirit".

  1. Valerie, thanks for sharing those two videos! The kids singing the Cherokee song was a good analyzing tool. You could really hear a call and response mechanism going on. Plus, the repetition, a few vocables, and the classic falling contour. The dance video was cool, too. The drumming kind of reminded me of what we did in class. :)

  2. The kids looked like they were taking the song very seriously, which is very important in order to keep the culture alive. Not only was the Japanese girl dancing to African music interesting, but the Japanese men on the African drums was interesting as well. The painting is a very good example of how every song plays a vital role in their way of life. I'm sure that no one would dress up and build fires for no important reason.

  3. I saw the Japanese girl while I was looking for videos on youtube. I thought it was really cool how so many cultures are being shared. The children in your video are a great example of that.

  4. The video of the Japanese girl doing an African dance is very cool--we'll see another Japanese artist involved in the music of another culture later in the semester. And I think it's so interesting that so many schools include at least a little about Native American arts and culture in the curriculum today--we didn't really have any of that when I was a kid.
